Cyclo races return in March
Saigon Cyclo Challenge
Saigon Children's Charity (SCC) will put on the eighth Saigon Cyclo Challenge in HCMC's District 7 on March 8. Teams will compete for prizes and collect money for underprivileged children.
SCC chairman Paul Finnis said there will be five separate industry races to determine who will compete in the final. The first and second placed teams in the industry races will qualify to enter the Grand Challenge Final, which is a two-lap race, to find the fastest competitor of the day.

The competition day will begin with a Grand Sponsor Parade at 1:30 p.m. before companies and organizations start to compete at 2:20 p.m., amidst the battles of drumming bands and cheerleaders.

Members of the HCMC Diplomatic Corps will also decide the Best Dressed Cyclo, Best Cheerleaders and Best Banner of the competition day, which is considered among the premier events in Saigon's charity and sporting calendar.

In addition to cycle races and the parade, the event will also feature a VIP marquee, a food village, corporate hospitality tents, bars and coffee corners.

There will be a children's zone boasting dozens of activities including driving mini-cyclos as well as free ice cream, drinks and prizes for our younger spectators of enjoy.

Organizers will sell entrance tickets for VND200,000 for adults and VND150,000 for children under 12 to raise money for charity projects that benefit disadvantaged children.

The organizers will also collect US$3,685 for a gold sponsorship package and US$2,145 for a silver sponsorship package. The Grand Prize worth US$935, product and prize sponsorship packages are also available.

Gold and Silver Sponsors will each provide a cyclo decorated in their company colors. Each cyclo will then be 'in the paddock' for allocation to competitors who will ride the cyclos in some seven races throughout the day.

Over the years hundreds of sponsors and thousands of participants have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the education of children in need. "Our goal is to raise US$60,000 in 2008,'' Finnis said.
